Capturing the Velvet Revolution: Photographs from Bratislava and Prague, 1989
When people took to the streets in the former Czechoslovakia in the fall of 1989 to express their dissatisfaction with the ruling totalitarian system, a few courageous individuals used their cameras to document this historic moment. 161 of these photographs—now part of the Volkskundemuseum Wien's (Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art) photo collection—depict demonstrations, banners, and posters from the “Velvet Revolution.” They are far more than mere historical records: even decades later, they vividly bring back the atmosphere of those weeks.
