Um den großen Übergang, den eine Geburt darstellt, gut zu bewältigen, wurdenUnterstützungsmaßnahmen entwickelt, die durch soziale, religiöse, ökonomische,historische, politische und medizinische Faktoren geprägt sind.

In den Industrienationen hat das Krankenhaus das vertraute häusliche Umfeld alsGeburtsort abgelöst. Im historischen und soziokulturellen Kontext stellt sich diewestliche Geburtsmedizin als mächtiges, gewachsenes, rituelles System unteranderen dar.
