The Fertility Dolls of the Dowayo People of Northern Cameroon

Fertility dolls can be found in many regions of Africa. In an agrarian population that cultivatesland and holds livestock, the fertility of land, animals, and humans is the most important con-cern. Fertility ensures the future of the human community, and the pressure to become preg-nant weighs heavily on women in a manner that should not be underestimated. The doll thata woman wears becomes a substitute for the desired child. In a society with a strong auto- sug-gestive tendency, sometimes this actually yields the desired result.

The dolls of the Dowayo in Northern Cameroon are particularly original and attractive, andtheir most noticeable attributes are the strings of pearls tightly wrapped around their bodies.The smith makes the fertility dolls, and smiths play a particularly important role in manyAfrican ethnic groups. The smith among the Dowayo not only produces earthly, profaneobjects for house and field, but he is also the master of ceremonies and cultic practices. Assuch, he is threatening, no less so as in his other functions as healer, gravedigger, and cir-cumciser. His wives are not only potters but also midwives, and like him are judged to be dirtyand dangerous. The Dowayo believe that deliberately excessive adornment wards off misfor-tune and illness, or can have healing power; when newborns are first presented to their fathersthey are also richly adorned. The many pearl strings on the fertility dolls act as a protectivecovering not only in their later use but also against contagion and contamination by theirmaker.

Fruchtbarkeitspuppen sind in vielen Regionen in Afrika verbreitet. Das wichtigste Anliegeneiner agrarischen und Viehzucht treibenden Bevölkerung ist die Fruchtbarkeit von Feldern,Vieh und Menschen, damit der Fortbestand der menschlichen Gemeinschaft gesichert ist. Aufden Frauen lastet ein nicht zu unterschätzender Druck schwanger zu werden. Die Puppe, dieeine Frau am Körper trägt, wird zum Stellvertreter für das ersehnte Kind und bringt in einerGesellschaft mit starker autosuggestiver Begabung manchmal tatsächlich die erhoffte Wirk-ung hervor.

Besonders originell und ansprechend sind die Puppen der Dowayo in Nordkamerun. Das Auf-fallendste an den Puppen ist eine feste Perlenumwicklung um den Körper. Der Erzeuger derFruchtbarkeitspuppen ist der Schmied. Der Schmied nimmt bei vielen Ethnien in Afrika eineSonderstellung ein. Er produziert bei den Dowayo nicht nur profane Haus- und Feldgeräte,sondern ist Kult- und Zeremonienmeister, Heiler, Beschneider und Totengräber und in diesenFunktionen auch bedrohlich. Seine Frauen sind sowohl Töpferinnen als auch Hebammen undgelten ebenfalls als schmutzig und gefährlich. Betont übermäßiges Schmücken wehrt Unheilund Krankheit ab bzw. kann diese heilen. Auch das Neugeborene wird seinem Vater bei derersten Besichtigung reich geschmückt vorgeführt. Die vielen Ketten der Puppen bilden einenSchutzmantel gegenüber Ansteckung und Verschmutzung durch ihren Hersteller und bei derweiteren Verwendung.
