The conference series Digital Libraries( Digitale Bibliothek) was organisedfor the fourth time in Graz from 21-22 November 2013 and this year'stheme was>> Kulturelles Erbe in der Cloud«. Day one consisted of threedifferent workshops: Austrian Books Online. Eine Private- Public Partner-ship; Europeana Cloud- New Spaces for Sharing Content, and TextGrid –Virtuelle Forschungsumgebung für die Geisteswissenschaften. I attended thelast two.
Europeana Cloud- New Spaces for Sharing Content- the workshopwas led by Markus Muhr, Technical Manager of the European Library.He started with an introduction to Europeana, which began in 2007and is currently situated at the National Library of the Netherlands. Asof November 2013, Europeana held ca 30 million records of metadataavailable from 2,200 European cultural institutions( libraries, museums,galleries, archives). Europeana does not host any digital content on itsown servers, it only provides links to the digital material at the partici-pating cultural institutions through the metadata in the digital material.He then continued with an introduction to the European Library, whichstarted in the 1990s and is seen as the» Mother« of Europeana. The roleof the European Library is to collate content for Europeana. Currentlythere are 48 national libraries and an increasing number of researchlibraries connected to the European Library. The European Librarycurrently indexes 120 million bibliographic records as well as 16 milliondigital links.
Co- ordinated by the European Library, the idea of Europeana Cloudis to set up a cloud- based system for Europeana and the collators. There
