Editorial
As you can see, after a few thinner issues, our newsletter is once again a richly filled edition. It reflects the dense program of the Volkskundemuseum in its interim location at the Otto Wagner Areal as well as at selected venues across the city. Our program focus Through the Dark is entering its final phase – at the beginning of July and in mid-September, two more micro-festivals will take place at the OWA. Come join us – it concerns us all, and it will be a celebration!
Speaking of celebrations: of course, there will be a summer festival again this year – after all, summer has arrived once more. Traditionally, it takes place on the first Tuesday of the summer holidays, and we are very much looking forward to celebrating together with old and new neighbors, friends, and partners of the museum in our – here much larger – garden. Starting at 5 p.m., everyone is warmly welcome. We will provide food, drinks, games, dance, and music late into the night.
The club space, the Franzi V. Space, named after Franziska Votypka, will be allowed to boom with music. Franziska Votypka (1927–1996) belonged to the anti-Nazi youth subculture known as the Schlurfs, who were persecuted by the regime. As a teenager, she was committed to the institution ‘Am Spiegelgrund’ and displayed resistant behavior even towards the doctors and nursing staff. It is said that she often danced until 3 a.m. Pavilion 1 is located on Franziska-Votypka-Weg. It is one of five “paths of resistance” by which the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance (DÖW) commemorates those who resisted between 1938 and 1945, symbolically naming the formerly nameless side streets of the OWA after them.
You can read more about the work of the DÖW at the Otto Wagner Areal and its cooperation with the Volkskundemuseum Wien in the interview with Linda Erker in this issue. Our colleagues from the cultural education team offer walks across the grounds and numerous other guided tours. Tirelessly active, they are networking with the other users at the OWA – to the great benefit of the program.
