THE STORY OF APPAYYA.*

अपूपेन हताः चोराःहता खड्गेन केसरीतुरंगेण हतं सैन्यम्विधिर्भाग्यानुसारिणी

IN a remote village there lived a poor Brahmaṇand his wife. Though several years of their weddedlife had passed, they unfortunately had no children,and so, being very eager for a child, and having nohope of one by his first wife, the poor Brahmaṇmade up his mind to marry a second. His wifewould not permit it for some time, but finding herhusband resolved, she gave way, thinking withinherself that she would manage somehow to do awaywith the second wife. As soon as he had got herconsent the Brahman arranged for his secondmarriage and wedded a beautiful Brâhman girl.She went to live with him in the same house withthe first wife, who, thinking that she would be
