386. X. A scholar travelling in a boat was mocked atby his fellow travellers who had asked him where his mer-chandise was and could not find any in the place he hadindicated. On landing, the custom officials took all theirproperty away. He went to the Beth ha- Midrash and lec-tured and was greatly honoured. His fellow travellers beggedof him to intervene on their behalf and save them fromstarvation. It was done for the sake of his scholarship. Hehad carried all his property on him.

The merchant gives him something; theother refuses saying he does not know him. The angel ofdeath meets them, spares the merchant fifty years longerbecause of charity, and allows the other to live becausehe wishes to recount the adventure for the glory of God.If a man be saved by giving once, how much more will hebe saved by making a habit of it?
