357( 9). An apostate accused the Jews of using bloodfor the passover bread. He drained the blood of a bird intoa bottle and put it in the ark among the scrolls and thendenounced them to the king and to the priests, saying hecould prove it. In the night the Shamash, or beadle of thesynagogue, was awakened by a dream telling him to goand search the ark and remove the danger. He went there,found the bottle, emptied it and filled it with red wine.Early next morning, the king, bishops, and all the princesof the army surrounded the synagogue. The leaders of thecommunity were called, the ark was opened and the bottlewas found filled with red wine, to be used as usual for thesanctification of the sabbath. The confounded apostate wasthen ordered to be hanged.

358( 10). A Christian once lent money to a Jew and tookas witness God and a tree. The Jew afterwards refused topay. The plaintiff then brought the case before the RabbiHariri, who ordered them both to come the next day. Thenext day he whispered something into the ear of the plain-tiff who went away, and the accused was kept waiting.Time passed and he got impatient and asked the rabbi forthe cause of the delay. The Rabbi replied," I have sent himto bring a branch from the tree, under which he lent you themoney."" Oh," said the accused," he will not be back beforethe evening."" 359( 11). A child born to a king refused to suck exceptfrom a Jewish nurse. She insisted upon keeping all theJewish laws if the child were to prosper. After a time, theking insisted upon her changing her faith, and when sherefused threatened her with death and gave her three daysto consider. At the end she came before the king and thecourt and said the young prince had made her a grant ofone of the provinces. The king replied," No son has a rightto give away any part of the kingdom in the lifetime ofhis father." She then replied," Our God, the Father, is still
