312( 18)[ f. 309 b]. A cow which belonged to a piousman when sold to a stranger refused to work on the Sab-bath and thus the trangressor was taught a lesson.

313( 20)[ f. 310b]. A brother- in- law left to protect hissister- in- law, accused her of adultery because she refusedto sin with him. She was stoned, but was rescued fromunder the heap of stones and led to another country toteach a young boy. The servant had a desire for her andas she rejected him he murdered the boy. She was sentaway and was picked up by a boat which nearly foundered.Lots were cast and fell on her. She was put down on thecoast. She there learned the art of healing leprosy. Herhusband and brother- in- law who had become leprous cameto her but did not recognise her. She made them confesstheir sins before curing them. The latter confessed hisguilt, and the former, on learning who she was rejoicedat her innocence.

314( 21)[ f. 311b]. R. Meir hearing a voice that ordereda serpent to kill Judah ha- Nassi ran ahead of it, reached thehouse, closed doors and windows and prayed intently. Theserpent unable to enter, coiled round the house till a voicefrom Heaven proclaimed R. Meir's prayer to be granted,when it departed.
