Ahitophel wrote the Name, the waters thenreturned to their former place, the stone was again replacedin its former position and this is the foundation stone ofthe world and the Temple.

158. A man neglected to wash his hands before mealsa public eating house and was thought from hisappearance to be a Gentile and was accordingly servedwith swine's flesh.

159. A man used to neglect to wash his hands after mealsand another, observing the traces of the last meal on hisfingers, went to that man's wife. He mentioned the foodlast partaken of, as a proof that he had been sent by herhusband, and robbed them of a very valuable thing. Thehusband killed the wife in his fury.

160. R. Akiba in prison used half of the drinking waterto wash his hands.

161. R. Hanina b. Dosa who had preached on the text," Receive every man as a friend" carried a Hegemon on hisshoulders to his house; he washed his feet, fed him well andthen carried him back again. It was an angel sent to tryhim, whether he would carry out his own teaching and hewas found perfect.

162. A daughter of R. Hanina b. Dosa fell into a pit.He was told twice and replied," Well, well." The thirdtime he said," She has come out," and it was so.

163. R. Hanina b. Dosa told his wife that heaven wouldprovide for the Sabbath meals, and bade his daughter lighta wick in a vessel filled with vinegar; it burned. Theoven which his wife had heated, although she believed it tobe empty, was found, when opened, to be full of bread.164. R. Hanina b. Dosa placed his food over the mouth of ascorpion's hole; he was bitten by the scorpion, but it wasthe scorpion which died in consequence thereof.

165. An adder bit R. Hanina b. Dosa whilst he was prayingand it died, while he remained unhurt.
