Jh. n. Chr. Sie hat die Form einer Theatermaske, die einen Satyr (Begleiter des Gottes Dionysos) bzw. einen Faun darstellt. Beide Figuren sind in der r\u00f6mischen Vorstellung verschmolzen. Auch der L\u00f6wenkopf weist auf den Gott Dionysos (Bacchus) hin, der nach Vorstellung der Antike auf einem von L\u00f6wen und Panthern gezogenen Wagen fuhr. Au\u00dferdem ist der L\u00f6we ein apotrop\u00e4isches Symbol.\rDas Original stammt h\u00f6chstwahrscheinlich von der Ausgrabung von Pompeji oder Herculaneum. Im 19. Jh. gab es etliche Gie\u00dfereien in Neapel und Umgebung, die solche hochwertigen Repliken herstellten.
